The Chaser is a 2008 Hong Kong crime thriller film written and directed by the Pang brothers, who also collaborated on the screenplay for "The Eye". The film revolves around a team of journalists from a sensationalistic tabloid called The Fourth Truth, who pursue a notorious criminal called Crazy Dog. At least two gunmen are hunting Crazy Dog down, plus other gang members who want him dead. The three journalists from the Fourth Truth have different motivations: one wants to redeem himself to his boss by finding out what happened to their fourth reporter who was documenting Crazy Dog's activities when he disappeared; another wants to show how dangerous it is being an investigative journalist in Hong Kong society; while the third is just desperate for money to pay off debts. In the midst of their attempts to capture Crazy Dog, they must also avoid getting killed by either him or his many enemies. The film is self-reflexive about the tabloid journalism it depicts. It was released in Hong Kong on 19 September 2008, and topped the box office for two consecutive weeks. It received a Category IIIa rating from the Hong Kong motion picture rating system's classification and censorship board, meaning that it may be viewed by those aged 18 and above. "The Chaser" is now regarded as a cult classic. The film premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. It was also screened at the 2008 San Sebastián International Film Festival, the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival in April 2009. It won the Grand Prize at the 27th Fantasporto film festival.
The Pang brothers cast Korean actor Lee Byung-hun to play Crazy Dog because they wanted to make an international action movie with an Asian, rather than a Hollywood action star. Lee had previously appeared in "A Bittersweet Life" (2005), which was also filmed by the Pangs, and was known for his role as Storm Shadow in "" (2006) and "" (2009). According to the Pangs, he was one of the few actors who actually took martial arts and weapons training and did his own stunts in "The Chaser". British actor Rhys Ifans plays the role of Paul, a reporter from The Fourth Truth. He says in an interview that he was drawn to the film's "[depiction of] journalists as very human, flawed people. [Crazy Dog is] a terrific character." Filming took place in Hong Kong for five weeks between October and November 2007. Locations include Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon; Fortress Hill; Kam Tin; Tai Po; and Wang Tau Hom in Hong Kong Island. The film was released on 19 September 2008 in Hong Kong, two weeks ahead of its original schedule of 3 October. The film's box office earnings have reached HK$42 million after four weeks of screening in the city. It earned more than HK$600 million in ticket sales worldwide. According to critics at "The Hollywood Reporter", the film is made in the style of films noir of the 1940s and 50s, with a fast-paced editing pace that creates a gritty, hard-boiled atmosphere. It contains some unusual narrative elements that depart from classical storytelling practices, according to "Time" film critic Richard Corliss.
